The European Commission presented its plan for reforming the electricity market on Tuesday, aiming to better protect consumers and promote the use of renewable energy to make the industry cleaner and more competitive.
The main axes of the proposal focus on:
-
Boosting investments in renewable energy with the goal of reducing fossil fuel dependency and achieving 70% renewable electricity by 2030
-
Giving new rights to citizens, including a fixed-price contract and regulated prices in case of crisis
-
Improving industry competitiveness by providing access to more stable long-term contracts.
The initial proposal will now have to be extrapolated to each member country, and they will have to decide how to transpose it into their internal regulations.
