After Macron’s refusal of the MidCat project, Spain, Portugal and France have announced an agreement to move forward with BarMAr, an underwater structure that will connect Barcelona and Marseille.
The new solution, which will have a length of 360 kilometers and is expected to take between four and five years to be built, will be more ecological than the previous alternative, given that, although it will be used to supply gas during a transition period, it is mainly designed for the transportation of green hydrogen and other renewable energies.
At the European level, it will be necessary to wait for more technical details of the project to know if the European Commission will be willing to invest part of the community funds, since according to the guidelines at present it is no longer possible to allocate funds to energy projects based on fossil fuels such as gas, but they could be used for projects aimed at green hydrogen transportation.
It is expected that Sánchez, Macron, and Costa will meet again in early December at the Euromed summit, which will take place in Alicante, to continue advancing in the technical definition of the proposal.
